Meditation for beginners

In this era of technology and fast paced changes we rarely allow ourselves to take a few moments and disconnect from all the chaos. Such a lifestyle has many consequences and challenges such as stress and anxiety. Practicing meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety by calming our mind and body.

When we allow ourselves to slow down and focus on the present moment, we train our attention and develop a better ability to focus. In addition to increased awareness and reduced stress, meditation also helps with sleep. Meditation can be an effective, natural solution if you struggle with sleep disorders. A quick meditation before sleep helps calming the nervous system.

Anyone and everyone can meditate. It is an accessible practice, and it is time and consistency that help beginners develop a habit. There is no age, location, lifestyle or skill that prevents  people from dedicating time to their mind and wellbeing. Furthermore, meditation doesn’t require any equipment, therefore you can meditate anywhere and anytime. Whether you are taking a break from work, you are on the bus on even getting ready for sleep you can reconnect with yourself, process emotions and thoughts and develop a sense of self-awareness.

If you don’t already meditate, there are several ways to get started. The easiest way to start a regular practice is guided meditation. It can be taught by a teacher or even online, the guided meditation will allow you to focus. There are many guided meditations that you can find online and meditation apps such as Headspace and Calm.

Meditation is an ancient practice with many different forms. Here are some of the most well known types of meditation that we suggest you to try especially if you are a beginner.

Mindful meditation

Mindful meditation is about bringing awareness to the present and to your thoughts and surroundings. All you need is to close your eyes and focus on your breath. If your minds start to wander, simply focus on your breathing again.

 Spiritual meditation

Spiritual meditation or Mantra involves repeating a sacred word or a phrase. Repeating the mantra helps quiet the mind and focus on the present moment. Praying is also spiritual meditation.

Visualisation meditation

Visualisation meditation is imagining and focusing on a particular image or scene. The goal is to relax the mind and body by visualizing a peaceful place. Focus on all the details such as colours, smells, sounds and feelings

Movement meditation

Movement meditation focuses on the sensations in your body as you move. For examples, focus on the sensations of your feet hitting the ground as you walk. The goal of this meditation is to be present and aware of your body as you move.

Love and Kindness Meditation

Love and kindness meditation involves cultivating feelings of love and compassion. Think of persons you love and for whom you feel gratitude. Send them thoughts of love and compassion. This can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Body Scan Meditation

Body scan meditation involves focusing on the sensations in the body. Close your eyes and focus on your breath and let your mind wander through your body. Notice any areas of tension or pain. The goal is to relax the mind and body by focusing on the sensations in the body.

Experiment with different styles and see what works best for you. Remember that mediation is a practice that takes time and patience. Wishing you a calm and relaxed journey.
