Encourage open communications to handle workplace gossip

Communication is one of the most important processes for the proper functioning and success of a business, regardless of its nature. Good communication, verbal or written, with business partners, customers or suppliers is essential. And especially with your colleagues. An unavoidable outcome of colleagues meeting and interacting frequently is workplace gossip and this can be identified in almost any organisation, all over the world.

Gossip has a bad reputation, being defined as toxic communication, and usually is conversations about other people that might be unkind or untrue. However, research showed that gossip is not always a bad thing as it serves a useful function. As Elena Martinescu stated in her paper “according to evolutionary theory, humans have developed gossip in order to facilitate co-operation in a group.” Keeping this in mind and considering that it is unrealistic to have a gossip-free workplace, we should ask what can we do to improve our daily communication and create a work environment where everyone feels safe, respected and appreciated.
