Highways Safety during Flood Conditions
During a flood, it is important to take special precautions when driving on highways. Here are some tips to stay safe while driving during flood conditions:
Do not drive through standing water: Even if the water appears shallow, do not attempt to drive through it. Water can be deeper than it appears and can quickly sweep a vehicle off the road.
Use caution when driving on wet roads: Wet roads can be slippery and increase the risk of hydroplaning. Drive at a reduced speed and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
Follow detour signs: If a road is closed due to flooding, follow the detour signs and take an alternate route.
Do not park near a flooded area: Do not park near a flooded area or on a bridge. Floodwaters can rise quickly and sweep away parked vehicles.
If you become stranded: If your vehicle becomes stranded in floodwaters, abandon it immediately and move to higher ground. Do not attempt to retrieve personal belongings from the vehicle.
